BUSINESSES have been signing up to a scheme designed to make tourism environmentally-friendly.
More than 600 organisations from the south east of England have applied to join The Green Tourism Board Scheme in the past year.
They are all hoping to achieve bronze, silver or gold standard for their commitment to sustainable tourism.
A scheme spokesman said: "There is no scheme in the world better placed to highlight the importance of protecting environments, respecting local cultures, supporting communities, conserving natural resources and minimising pollution."
The Green Tourism Business Scheme, which is now running across England and Scotland, ensures members meet minimal standards in over 150 measures.
These include efficient lighting, heating, nature conservation and renewable energy, use of local produce and community involvement.
