YOUNGSTERS have designed banners to be hung outside their school's two entrances to improve road safety.

Forty pupils at Highway Primary School in The Highway, Orpington, entered a competition to make the banners, which was organised by Bromley Council's school travel plan team.

Two banners, one for each entrance, were chosen to prevent motorists stopping on the zig-zag lines outside the school.

From the original 40 entries, six were then judged by the school travel plan team, which advises schools about road safety.

The two winners were Becky Fryza, aged nine from Year 4 and David Capon, aged 10 from Year 6.

Both pupils received t-shirts displaying their designs.

Headteacher Susan Kenneth said: "The safety of our children is paramount and the banner competition was an excellent initiative organised to highlight the issue of cars stopping on the zig-zag lines outside our school."
