STRONG winds blew over a tree, crushing two cars in Northfleet this morning.

The 40ft tree was toppled in Vale Road at 8.55am today.

Two cars and a wall were crushed by the tree.

Kent Police say they have received a number of reports of trees down, blocking roads around the county.

And severe winds have blown scaffolding poles and boards across roads, say police.

People are warned to look out for tiles blown off rooves and motorists in the region have been told to expect delays due to the bad weather forecast for the next few days.

Reports suggest there could be severe winds of up to 80 miles per hour and rain across the region from this evening.

The Queen Elizabeth Bridge at the Dartford Crossing is closed because of strong wind.

Police advice for motorists

Police advise motorists to check the weather forecast and road conditions before travelling and make sure you have plenty of fuel.

Be vigilant, drive slowly and carry warm waterproof clothes and a torch in the car.

Avoid exposed routes such as bridges and high open roads.

Avoid driving in heavy rain and never drive through floods.

In strong winds

Police say secure any loose objects, like ladders and garden furniture and bring anything breakable indoors.

Close and fasten doors and windows and stay indoors if possible.

When outside stand clear of boundary walls and fences.
