Men of Kent and Kentish Men — Orpington Branch

4:28pm Friday 29th February 2008

MEMBERS heard a talk from Lt Col Colin Fairclough of the Salvation Army.

He had been an officer in the Salvation Army for 43 years and had several different postings.

At one time he had been posted to south Atlantic island St Helena, the only communication being by ship four times a year, which sometimes caused difficulties.

He has also had placements in the Phillipines and Rhodesia.

In 1983, he came to Canterbury as part of the family tracing service where he handled 91,000 inquiries in nearly 20 years.

His talk contained many amusing incidents and gave us an insight into his work. A most interesting evening.

Last month, members were treated to an entertaining talk by Brian Thatcher on his 31 years in the Police.

He started by working at Lewisham Police Station and later transferred to St Mary Cray.

Mr Thatcher had a wealth of experience to draw on and had many amusing and intriguing anecdotes.
