On this day in...

1917 - The Government announced that women were permitted to become taxi drivers.

1959 - The Barbie doll, in a zebra-striped swimsuit, was launched in America.

1967 - There was a teenage frenzy when The Monkees arrived at Heathrow Airport.

1997 - British au pair Louise Woodward was charged with the murder of Matthew Eappen in Boston, Massachusetts. In court the conviction was reduced to involuntary manslaughter.

2000 - A couple on a weekend break stopped at the Watford Gap Services on the M1 and were arrested. They were accused of having stolen a sheet, and spent the night in cells. The following morning they were released after hotel staff found the sheet.

2001 - A team of Thai vets headed into the jungle to free a monkey which had its head stuck in a coconut for four days.
