Update: 'Illegal immigrants' found in tanker

RESIDENTS have described the moment eight people, who are believed to be, illegal immigrants were pulled out of a tanker just metres from their homes.
The stowaways were discovered by the vehicle's driver when he checked his load on the way to Crossness Sewage Works, Belvedere Road, Abbey Wood.
Emergency services dragged them from the top of the tanker and they were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of gas emitted from the load.
A 100m cordon was put in place while firefighters wearing breathing apparatus investigated the contents of the tanker which were later declared safe and believed to be powdered charcoal.
Police say the eight people's injuries are not thought to be serious but when they were first got out Lorraine Johnson, of Sewell Road, Thamesmead, thought they were dead.
The 57-year-old said: "My workmen were looking up the road and I said what's going on and I thought somebody had smashed into the railings.
"I said what's going on and they said police had stopped that tanker then three other police cars turned up then the fire brigade turned up.
The carer said: "They opened the tanker up and they pulled out a body and then they pulled out eight or nine, laid them on the pavement and covered them up.
"I thought they were all dead.
"They were all black and all you could see was their heads and oxygen masks on them.
"The policeman said they were all from eastern Europe."
Abbey Akinoshun, 43, who lives in the road, said: "I came out of my house this morning and saw there was a helicopter out, an ambulance and fire trucks.
"I was told to go back in my house and they wouldn't let anybody leave."
Police are guarding the truck which is currently at the Crossness sewage works.

Thamesmead has always been drab. The only reason people live there is because they can't afford to live anywhere else.
I have had the misfortune to drive through Thamesmead and found it an extremely depressing experience.
By the way, I did not see ONE immigrant.

The news story is about immigrants , not Thamesmead.
Stick to the relevance of the story for your comments. You have a blog on this site to air your views on other subjects you feel qualified enough to discuss.

You say people in Thamesmead are poor, how do you know this? Yes it has council estates, where doesn't? Does that make the people who live there any less of a person than you? I very much doubt it. Immigrants have changed Thamesmead FACT, as they have changed the rest of the country - in some cases for the worst.

The fact of the matter is another bunch of Illegal Immigrants have managed to get into our country without being stopped prior to this.
France just wave them merrily through at the border as they don't want to have to deal with them and make it someone else's problem.
It is not a case of being racist it is a case of most law abiding people in this country are sick of having our resources sucked dry by the freeloaders arriving by the (pardon the pun) truckload.
By the way, I lived on Thamesmead for 31 years before I moved out and not once was I mugged or burgled, another case of the minority spoling it for the majority.

The best way to stop using so much petrol is to deport 3 million illegal immigrants!
That would be 3 million less people using our petrol. The price of petrol would come down.....
Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the Channel....
When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the Channel, hand him a canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Iraq .....
Tell him if he wants to come to Britain then he must serve a tour in the military....
Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it.....
After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country.....
He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal resident..... .
This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves.......
If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo.....

Yes, lets get back to the matter in hand. The tanker company need to take some responsibility since these people were able to get into the tanker and travel in it. Problem is you cannot just not treat them since that is inhhumane and that would not be right. However, the bill needs to be paid - maybe the tanker company should pay and they can then reclaim it from the country that these people came from! Drivers should check their loads when they get off the ferry, if they find any immigrants they should notify the authorities and the ferry company's liable.
Ferry companies should check the lorries before they get onto their ship, if they find any immigrants the driver is liable.
It might all be a bit OTT but it's probably the only way to stop the trade of human smuggling. Make people liable, make people pay.
As for if the people from the tanker should be treated, well I believe that they should. It's the clinging on to our humanity and decency despite the challenges we face that I think defines who we are.
After they're treated I do believe that they should be deported back to their home nation, if possible, and if not then back to their last port of call.
Sending them home might seem like a waste of money but I think it'll send a sterner message than just sending them back across the channel where it's a short and cheap hop to make a 2nd attempt.
And Erastus? He's here to make a name for himself and to draw readers for his blog. I don't think that he ever fails to mention that he has a blog after he's kicked up a storm. If you don't like what he says ignore him, every comment that mentions him is something he sees as a bonus and only encourages him to keep taking shots at people.

To Erastus Yes I actually want to get away from thamesmead. I am not scum, I work for the top childrens Hospital in London, my partner is a London Taxi Driver and my son works at the O2. So we are all decent people paying our taxes. The reason why I am moving is simple, I am fed up to the back teeth of every time I look out my door all I see is immigrants, I will see at least 10 black faces before I see a white person and that is the only reason why I am moving, there is nothing wrong with Thamesmead apart from the immigrants and I have lived here for over 15 years. I have actually seen a lovely little bungalow in Dartford.

thamesmead is not as bad as you make it out to be.
abbey wood is worse. my mum got raped in abbey wood, my friends dad got stabbed in abbey wood, another one of my friends got mugged in abbey wood. and it is not only abbey wood (i am not saying it is the worst place ever).everywhere you go now something bad is happening.even in the 'nice' places there are still muggings, stabbings, etc.

I moved there when I was 6, and left when I was 14. I was robbed twice (once for a computer game I had on me, another time I was kicked off my mountain bike), I also had about 5 other bikes stolen from outside the shops in SE28 near the boiler house and from my drive, my old mans car was broken into twice, my house was burgled, and I've seen numerous incidents of burnt out cars and stolen motorbikes/mopeds being driven over the local fields (crossways park).
My mum lived there since the 70's previously before moving, and it's always had a bad name - it was an area used to re-house people in 'slum housing' in East London if anybody didn't know. Although my family moved there from Catford.
These days the area is just as bad if not worse, and I can tell you the number of immigrants there has risen hugely as it was a prodominantely 'white working class area' when I lived there.
It's not all bad (if you live in West Thamesmead and some parts of cross ways) but a majority of that area is a pit.

As a kid I didn't think anything of growing up in Thamesmead it was just 'normal' but now when I think back after to moving to Bexleyheath, and a few places after you kind of get to understand why it's not a very nice place.
I don't dislike it completely as I feel attached to it due to my upbringing and the fact I have family there but I wouldn't choose to live there over anywhere else in Bexley borough. The only place worse than Thamesmead in the Greenwich borough also is Woolwich!

Perhaps they told you something else about their housing priorities and you misunderstood that criteria.
Immigrants are the least likely people to be housed by the council, especially today. Most immigrants are here legally and are not entitled to apply for council housing. Even spouses who are immigrants are not entitled to any benefits as their husbands or wives are obliged to support them.
Even many illegal immigrants do not apply for housing as often they are here to secretly work and are usually housed illegally by criminals in Britain. Now there is a section of the illegal immigrant population who do are supplied housing, these are people fleeing persecution.
Here is an answer supplied by one council (that applies to all) to address the misconception you have.
"Can asylum seekers jump the housing list?
No. The Council receives extra funding from the government to make housing available for asylum seekers, and this is usually spent to bring void properties (low demand units or property in very poor condition that is not being let) back into use. Many asylum seekers are housed in private accommodation. None of this is paid for out of council tax.
If an asylum seeker proves their case and is accepted as a refugee, they have to find their own housing or wait on the council waiting list just like anyone else. They do not receive any extra points or preferential treatment."
It is, however, true that it is very difficult now to get housing from the council. This is becuase Margaret Thatcher reduced the social housing stock by allowing people to take such housing out of this stock by buying them and not building new council homes. This issue has absolutely nothing to do with the immigration issue. Her government brought about this decline and no government since has reversed the decline in the availability of social housing that people of your generation did well to fight for. The younger generations that followed you amongst working people have found it harder to find their feet politically in order to fend off these cutbacks. This decline has been set back by the loss of a major political party holding that once provided an ability for people of lesser access to wealth to negotiate better terms for their place in society. I am talking about the Labour Party's shift to the right.
I know you have not done this but some people on here have actually supported the notion of killing a twelve year old boys.
