A 13-YEAR-OLD girl had a pair of scissors "stuck in the back of her head" after an incident at a school in Orpington this morning.

Police were called to Priory School in Tintagel Road at 10.50am after the incident during an humanities lesson.

A sixth-form girl, 17, said: "A boy and girl were having an argument, the girl threw a paper ball at the boy and the boy threw scissors back and they stuck in the back of her head."

A 17-year-old boy, another sixth-former at the school, added: "One of the teachers said 'Are you alright?' and she couldn't speak.

"She got in the ambulance and there were scissors in the back of her head and you could only see the handle."

The girl was taken to the Princess Royal University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. She has since been released.

  • A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Is anyone suprised? We're talking about The Priory here, smack bang in the middle of the Ramsden Estate. It's lucky that it was only scissors that were thrown.

I go to the priory sixth form and have been at the priory school for around 6years. So for your information it isn't 'smack band in the middle of ramsden' as you stupidily say. You could say that about a lot of schools being near ramsden. Teachers dealt with it well, and the reputation of my school, is raising rapidly. Just a shame to have another knock back!!!!!!!

Firstly best wishes to the families incolved. Secondly people should not comment on the school unless they have sent kids there....look at the reports and the increased examinations results before you comment! I have had 3 children at the school and have been extremely happy with the staff, teaching and school ethos. Keep up the good work Priory...

I'm sure it is too easy for people to jump to conclusions as to this matter.... and be assured the Priory will deal with this incident correctly.

Best wishes again to the families involved.

What sad news. I have 2 children at the Priory and have the utmost respect for the school. Its a shame some people in Orpington think they are to good to send their children there!! Only the other day my car was spat over by Darrick Wood children that thought it funny to play chicken in Crofton Road!!! Keep the good work up Priory.

This is not the fault of the school. The Priory may have had a bad reputation in the past, but it is in fact an excellent school, and getting better by the day. This incident was something stupid that went too far, it could happen in any school, it is just unfortunate that it happened in a school that has been frowned upon previously. The school is very good, and people shouldn't insult it unless they actually know what they are talking about.

Firstly, I am pleased that the girl has been released from hospital.

Secondly, I am an ex head boy of the school and can only praise the staff for their hard work and efforts. The Priory has had it's bad times like every school but believe me, every member of staff there is committed and dedicated to ensure those students get the best. Keep up the hard work!

Parent, Orpington says...
5:18pm Mon 21 Jan 08

Firstly, hope the two children ivolved have learnt a valuable lesson from this and that, with the support from the School and their parents can move on quickly.

Secondly, what a shame some parents are so blinkered! I have 3 children at the school, if fact, I turned down a place at Chis and Sid for one of them, and have nothing but praise for it. Every school, and I mean every school, has problems with bullying, behaviour etc., but the Staff at the Priory are dedicated to the children and their well being. Deliver a excellent standard of education, with exam results rising yearly. Let's not let this drag the school down. Every child that goes there should hold their head up high and be proud of the fact.

Keep it up Priory.

I agree i used to go to the priory too, but i left to become a pre-16 at college. I know for a fact that The Priory isn't as bad as what people make out. There are some really nice kids at that school. You shouldn't judge kids by what school they go to. Everyone is different!! x

Firstly the priory school has improved greatly in recent years, and does not deserve this sort of reputation. Ive been at the school now for over 5 years and the staff have been nothing but helpful and considerate to any situation that arises. This incident, i hope, will never happen again.

Secondly there is no real need for these comments about people's spelling and the way they type. Just because people may not type in proper english does not mean the school is any worse or better.

I hope the girl, in question, gets better and all the best to the family.

I have attended the school for 6 years now and although it has it's bad points, if you want to do well and succeed in the Priory you can. The school has had to suffer it's bad reputation for a long time, but it isn't deserved at all as even in the 6 years I've been attending they have turned it around dramatically. Every school has it's faults, and it's not fair for anyone to comment on what happened today unless they were actually there.

the response to John's comment wasn't needed, fistly if you have no involvement with the school, how can you judge purely based on this story. A minority ruin the reputation of the school. I also don't see the need to have a go at the parents of students at the school, especially as how it's very hard for a student to actaully get into a secondary school at current, and by sending there children to a local school, i fail to see how they have done wrong. I also feel that there is no need to "slag off" Johns comment with a spiteful and irrelevant point, theres purely no need to stoop to that level, you should be embarassed of yourself mate.

I am writing in response to the disgusting abuse shown towards my school, in the direction of the bigoted parents on this website amongst many other miscreants who have offended a student body as a whole.

How dare you make these claims towards a school you have had no dealings with, or even if you have, by a small minority that for the most part, do not fairly represent our school as a whole?

Whilst I admit that students will acknowledge that our school does not have the best reputation, perhaps because it is mixed, comprehensive with mixed ability, I think our student body also notes that the efforts put in by the students, staff and parents, and how when it comes down to it, despite some differences, I think the Priory experience is one of jovial tales, not a tale of a an oppressed student, bound by the grades he or she gets, but by the content of his or her character.

Who are you to make comments about the grammar, ability and crime in our school? I’m afraid to tell you but YOUR BELIEF SYSTEM IS FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG.

A parent & ex Student, says...

This sort of incident can sadly occur in any school. I find it a little disappointing that certain posters have elected to use it as an excuse to be-little the school and the neighbourhood. What is their agenda I wonder? And what are they trying to achieve?

For what it is worth I attended the school, many years ago and did pretty well for myself and I’m now able to support myself and my family in the area I was brought up in a 4 bedroom detached house. I had no reservations what so ever in sending my own daughter there, who happens to be doing very well for herself. I do not need to be told about how high I should set my standards and I’m sure that goes for the other parents at the school. Please also remember that not everyone is lucky enough to make a choice, although I was and still choose the Priory for my daughter.

Where were the negative posters when the school obtained its best GCSE’s results for years in 2007. Nowhere I guess, for 2 reasons

1) It does not fit into their agenda

2) they would not have been aware as positive news will never get as much press as negative..

Unquote.

Response? Yawn!

Having worked in the press earlier in my life (and actually now working in education) I can tell you exactly why an individual school's exam results are not big news. It is because getting good exam results is what a school SHOULD be doing as a matter of course each and every year. However, a pupil getting wounded by a pair of scissors is something that should NOT happen, therefore is news.

My son knows both these kids, and although I am not going to comment on them indivually, I am going to ask people why they think it is the fault or any reflection of the school!!!

Next people will be saying that the Priory was at fault for supplying scissors!!! How pathetic!

Each and every child has the right to an education, and despite any illnesses, disabilities, mental health problems or whatever... they were both entitled to an education.

As mentioned in a previous post my sympathy goes out to both families, however, until the whole facts are bought to light - no one has the right to judge or condemn those involved....

I have had three children at the Priory with two more to get through Secondary education, and - Yes - I will be happily sending them to the Priory, and - Yes - I do have the choice of other schools in the Borough!

Having worked for the LBB in the behaviour servce I can assure you,in my opinion, that the other secondary schools are not so perfect.... perhaps they are just more secretive in what happens...but beleive me....the Priory is no worse...if not better than the majority of others...

Would the school have received the same negativity if the incident would have happened on the bus or on the way to school? No I think not.....

Wonder why the Priory didn't get the same acknowledgement when they exceeded all expectations in last years GCSE results?

Also it is now everyday that this happens so people of course are going to be worried about their students at the school. Most students are a respectable to everybody and people think that the priory has a bad reputation because of the people that goes there, but thier are wrong. 9:39am Tue 22 Jan 08

I'd just like to inform everyone who has been commenting about this incident, The Priory School isn't this neanderthal ridden insitutue that you are lead to believe it to be. Firstly, it is not "smack bang" in the middle of Ramsden Estate, whether it is or not, isn't the point. Secondly, the pupil involved was not a generalisation of how and what the ENTIRE Priory Student body acts like, much to everyone contradiction, The Priory is filled with students who work hard and achieve amazing results, such as, 6A*'s at GCSEs, 4A's at A level and an acceptance to Cambridge Uni, because two younger students acted in this way, I dont see why you can deem this school so terribly that it should "LOCK THE DOORS AND BLOW IT THE HELL". If you have ever attended the Priory, then you know about the school and how it achieves so much more than anyone gives it credit for, due to the incredible dedication of students, parents and teachers. Bullying occurs in any school, I know people who have been bullied here, and even in school such as Willmington, its disgusting how you allow yourselves to be so small minded and comment on what you THINK you know of the school.

Monique, Orpington says...
9:40am Tue 22 Jan 08

To everyone that has a bad word to say about the Priory, shut up. I left there 2 years ago and I think it was a brilliant school. I know this has nothing to do with the article, but I get sick of people saying how bad this school is. It's as good as you make it, I think they are doing very well with the students that go there. I'd like to see you all do a better job. Not possible. As for the article, yes it is a shame, but to be honest, these things happen, no matter where you go,no matter what school you attend. So don't speak bad of the priory.

I am surprised at the level of venom aimed at the Priory School over this incident. When I moved to the area I took people's advice not to send my child to the Priory instead sending her to Darrick Wood School where she was ruthlessly bullied and ended up leaving there. Her bully is still attending Darrick Wood with freedom to continue the reign of terror unchecked by the school. Since then I have heard nothing but good reports about the Priory School. I wish I had done more research myself and sent my child to the Priory. This is surely a one off incident between these children which hopefully everyone has learnt lessons from. Darrick Wood has a lot more problems than are reported - they just have a more protective board of Governers who are better at covering up perhaps.

I don't think very much of the geography lessons at this school. The Priory IS in the middle of the Ramsden Estate; any good quality OS map will tell you that. No you're not all bad, but there are certainly some little herbets in this area; for example those who frequent the shops located directly opposite the school. Sorry you feel that way about the school, but why and how can you blame them for the incident. Being last years deputy head boy, I worked with a lot of the lower years, where students were having problems. The school did nothing but try their absolute hardest to provide a safe environment for the children. I know this as I worked in close proximity to the numerous counsillors. You cannot blame the school which has done so well in changing peoples perceptions, for a one off incident.

this could have happened at any school - it just happens to have been the priory. i've been going to the school for seven years and its a great school which is improving in many ways all the time so that its stereotype of being a 'chav-school' with violent kids just can't be justified anymore.
the incident yesterday was handled really well from what i saw of it and a letter was sent round to reassure everyone and inform them of what had happened.

Lets put this into perspective here-

ALL SCHOOLS need funding to be better at what they do

True the Priory doesn't have the best reputation, so what? 'Boi' isn't lazy talk, it's misspelt. It's B O Y!

I do agree we have deviated from the story somewhat...but if these are the voices of our so called future. I for one am very worried...(again it's not all of you)

I'd be very interested to read your blog, My Lord.

Students from Priory should be disgusted with themselves, the entries have been terrible. Darrick Wood pupils have at least written correctly. There is no comparison. Darrick Woods results were 82% this year however it is in the middle of a middle class area unlike the priory. The Priory will always have lower results because of where it is situated. However results are not the whole story but from what has been written on here I would not want to send a child to the Priory. I would not want to have to mix with the rude, offensive and iliterates who have written on this site.

I'm now in the last year of 6th form, so I've been attending the Priory School for almost 7 years, and this is the first big incident thats ever happened since I've been there. I don't understand why our school gets such a bad reputation! It doesn't matter that we're located in the middle of ramsden estate; that's got nothing to do with it! and this is coming from someone who got 11 GCSEs, all A*-Cs. It's unfortunate that this has happened and my sympathy goes out to all the people involved, but don't critisize the school on one incident, especially as its the only one i know of since i joined the school in 2001!

ok lets get it straight. Yes a girl has been stabbed in the bak of the head with scissors by a boy, both of whom were in year 9. Its a terrible incident and everyone feels for the young girl and her family. The Priory is not a bad school, the results are getting better each year and the taching staff are of great standards (coming from a student!) So parents, people, stop slagging it off! If you don't go you have no right to say its a bad school. This incident could have happened at any school, even saint olafs!!

Yet another Priory student, says...
4:06pm Tue 22 Jan 08

My apologies but I did not realise that this was a class issue and you can hardly call the Ramsden estate “middle class.” However more to the point this is supposed to be about a student who got hurt. It was a stupid mistake, but in no way is it a reflection of the Priory school, its students or its teachers. The fact of the matter is the priory school takes on children of under privileged circumstances and children who have learning difficulties, of which other schools have turned there nose up to . Intelligence and grades are by no means a way of judging character and if you do see it as such then you are even more ignorant then the people you choose to insult. The majority of pupils of the priory school will grow up to be productive members of society and even more so predominant members. If you choose to take rumours and slander as facts and statistics then perhaps you are the problem with modern society rather than those who cannot spell.

My daughter witnessed first hand the injury to the Pupil and of course was very upset. I had to explain to her that it was NOT the school at fault and that indeed this could happen anywhere, unfortunately.
I did not choose to send my daughter to the Priory, I had no choice, we live in a 'black hole' that is NOT in any catchment area. However my daughter is doing well and understands that it's what she puts in to the schooling that she receives to leave with a decent education. I have no complaints about the school. I would like to comment though that anybody who has a child with a mobile phone or internet access will know that in most cases their children are far from illiterate, it is abbreviated text spelling, my child does exactly the same. It's a 'teenage' thing. However, I know she can actually spell when it counts.

Look at these comments that have been posted, its just a huge argument between people who have no idea what they are talking about. I go to the priory school, and i couldn't ask for better education and help from the staff, to be fair some staff aren't the best but students don't always like the teachers. But hey is the girl being stabbed in the head anything to do with the education of the kids. This could have happened at any school, unfortunately the priory, i know it isn't the best and it's been stereotyped because it is on Ramsden Estate, that has nothing to do with the school. The incident got out of hand, and i know the poor girl, she talks to me and my friends at school and she is wicked! she is always smiling and laughing and is a lovely girl, hopefully she is all well and recovered. But all i say that needs to be improved with the school is the welfare for the kids who have learning disabilities. I am one of the groups at school that are misjudged as a troublemaker, its just those few kids in school that let everyone down, not every child at this school is as bad as you think, me and friends get dirty looks as we walk to school just for wearing the uniform, pathetic i must say. But Priory isn't as bad as you think, don't judge until you see.

a parent of priory student, orpington says...

I did not want my daughter to attend The Priory School because I had always believed it had a bad reputation. This actually stemmed from the days of 'Ramsden' Boys / Girls school.

My daughter has improved her grades in 'leaps and bounds' since she has been at this school and I am very impressed and glad that she now attends this school.

The school deal positively with any bullying / violence etc and it is not tolerated. I am not sure what happened in this incident, nor are most of you, as you were not there. Have you ever heard of the 'straw that broke the camel's back'? I do know that it will be dealt with appropriately.

You may have noticed, that even the 'best schools' who have high exam results still have issues regarding bullying and injuries to pupils, not just The Priory.

I'm sure you can remember back to your days when you were bullied, or had a friend that was!

We are looking at a matter where a child has been injured, and I am not sure why you are all insisting on correcting the pupils' English and grammar. This is not relevant.

The reason that many young people, not just those at The Priory, are appearing not to be able to spell is because of the consistent use of mobile telephones and computers. It is, unfortuately, a sign of the times, and perhaps an issue to be addressed by the government, over which the school has no say.

Keep up the good work, Mr Ware.

Best wishes to the pupil who was injured.

"Also pupils were asked to refrain from writing comments on this website."

I am very concerned by this comment about pupils being hushed. I find it shocking that a secondary school would try to suppress its pupils' freedom of speech and their right to express themselves after such a major incident. Also dictating to pupils what they can or cannot do in their own time is totally wrong.

I smells a rat here. I cannot help but think the corporate PR side of the school has taken over and they are doing what they can to brush this under the table and trying to avoid any negative publicity. Well I think we can safely say that has backfired. Thats what they deserve for trying to gag their students and keep them quiet.

I have two children attending The Priory, and I hope my third will attend in September.
My thoughts go out to both families involved in this incident, an incident that could happen in any school. Many negative comments relating to Monday's events, seem to be by people who have little or no facts, and are using this opportunity to merely put down this school and its students. The Head Teacher and his staff are not to blame for what happened, and they dealt with the care and support of the other students at school who will undoubtedly be shocked and upset by what happened. Lets read the newspapers and watch the news and we will see that the events of Monday are not isolated soley to The Priory School. Again thoughts and best wishes to the families of both children involved.

I have read all the comments that people have written and I must say that I am really worried, and now considering teaching my child at home.

But i would like to add that i feel the majority of the blame should lay at the feet of the parents. Children learn the difference between right and wrong from the time that they are born.
By the time the reach secondary school it is to late for the teachers to change behaviour that these children and their parents consider normal.
The rest of the well behaved and intelligent children then have to pay the price for the other parents failings.

I have actually moved away from the Ramsden area recently. I got fed up with constantly coming across yellow Police boards asking for information on Murder/Attempted Murder/Muggings etc. Gets you down after a while.

I did actually add a comment later on that of course this does not apply to all students of this school, which has obviously been drowned out. Unfortunately I think some of the other comments on here from pupils themselves speak volumes. Well done to the others for triumphing through adversity.

It is obvious that a large proportion of the children who attend the school come from disfunctional families.

The students should be streamed into good and bad and dispersed accordingly.

ok lets make one thing stright, just because one student did something wrong you shouldn't go around judging the whole school and the students who want to do well. There are many schools that have probably had a incident that made the school look bad. The Priory isn't bad I have been a student at this the priory and this school has helped me so much i was bullied they helped me.I have learning diffculties they helped and i got my 6 GCSE's and im now doing 3 A levels and going to uni. So stop putting the Priory down because you have nothing better to do. Just because one student did something wrong in a school that has had some bad things about it doesn't mean it should have to be put down. And those parents who said' thats why i didn't send my child there' shut up you are only going by stories our grades in sats and gcses and Alevels results have improved and behaviour system is getting better. So stop judging and go by our results instead of some incident that happened and it was sorted out well by teachers and im sure the girl who was hurt will be back in school doing well.

Above all, she must grow-up and learn to respect her elders.

I now volunteer with a local youth club, which is mostly attended by current Priory students, who are all a joy to work with. They are as appauled and concerned by Monday's events as the next person.

The Priory may have its areas to work on, as do all schools- grammar, state or private, but it really should be commended for its achievements.

This is a truly awful incident and I trust The Priory will deal with the situation accordingly.

Why do you think they try to stop the kids commenting on here? Don't you think the school are embarrassed enough at having a student go to hospital with scissors hanging out of the back of her head, rather than the added embarrassment of obvious pupils comments on here "aar man" "well safe" "jokez" "it's called ICT" etc etc. I'm not suprised the school tried to stop pupils commenting on here!!!

Really, this sums up the snobbish attitude of many who live in Bromley. It never fails to amaze me how class divisions still seems to matter, even when we are talking about an incident like this. If a child is hurt no matter which school they attend we should be empathetic and supportive, rather than being critical and judgemental. These children are our future and as adults we should teach our children to respect all. I know it is difficult for some in a such materialistic world. Since when has it been your decision to close down schools? I understand that it is your opinion but sometimes opnions are best said once and only once.

And also do not make assumptions about the children in question, you have no idea if they are dysfunctional or not, and if they are it is no business of yours. Let the parents worry about their own children, they do not need people like you interferring with comments that is written on the News Shopper website, which they will probably never read.

And you say that we are all hanging around wasting time while the school could be shut down? Please Sir Pompous, take into context of what you are doing before you dictate others.

I wonder how long it will be before some idiot do-gooder writes on here appealing for us to think of the poor child's feelings who threw the scissors. Oh, I forgot. The judge will do that when it goes to court. Silly Old Erastus!
It seems every story i read Erastus you have commented on, do you have a life? Or do you think this is your own chat show, Jermeamy Kyle?

I find it hard to understand how a person that hasn't been to the priory or has no children there can have a valid opinion of what the school is like. The fact of the matter is that these people are the sort of people that have there head so firmly stuck up their own arse they fail to see this accident could of happened anywhere and the fact that it took place at the Priory School doesn't actually mean anything, it was unfortunate that it did, but that is all it was unfortunate. I am an ex-student of the school and i can say from a first hand-exsperiance, it's not that bad. Sure it has the odd problem with the odd student but if those snobby people that have oviously had the time to look down their noses at us by reading this article and jumping to a conclusion and actually took the same amount of time to look around at the world they live in they would realise oh maybe these sort of things happen everyday maybe? Then again that bubble that they so oviously live in, may of become so big they can't relise that.
What i find disgusting though is that they have used the suffering of a girl, to take a dig at the Priory, if they don't find that disgraceful then well they just proven me right.

i'm sorry but I can't let it go unnoticed, but didn't an incident involiving students at hays had the same problem with a student being stabbed with scissors, and in another school a pupil was stabbed with scissors. so before you start slaging off our school try looking at the more 'upper class' schools
