Family's tribute to boy killed in bus tragedy

THE family of an 11-year-old boy who died after being struck by a bus on his way to school has paid tribute to their "bright star".

Matthew Hobbs was crossing Princes Road, Dartford, with a family member when the accident happened at around 7.26am yesterday (January 9).

Emergency services were called but the Wilmington Grammar School for Boys pupil died at the scene.

In a statement, his parents Leonard and Valerie Hobbs, of Brent Lane, Dartford, said: "Matthew was well loved by all and left a lasting impression on everybody he met with his ready smile, witty humour and boundless energy.

"He was a loving son and brother and a bright star who had far to go.

"Matthew was motivated and would do his absolute best at all times."

The couple say the family appreciate everybody's thoughts and prayers.

His brother Duncan said: "My brother was an absolute legend, loved by all his friends and mine too.

"He is totally irreplaceable."

Matthew was in his school's Blazing Brass show band and had just been appointed the goalkeeper for Fleetdown United under-12s football team.

The female bus driver was taken to Darent Valley Hospital suffering from shock.

Princes Road was closed after the incident and reopened around four hours later.

Kent Police's serious collision unit is investigating what happened and anyone who has any information should call 01622 798538.
