A UNIT set up to take pressure off A&E staff is celebrating its first year in operation.

West Kent Primary Care Trust's Urgent Care Centre, based within Darent Valley Hospital, opened its doors on January 2 last year.

It provides a 24-hour service to people needing urgent treatment for minor illnesses or injuries.

The team is led by Liz Frazer, an emergency nurse practitioner, who took over as modern matron at the beginning of November.

It consists primarily of nurse practitioners experienced in minor illnesses.

Trust assistant director for adult services Debbie Lindon-Taylor said: "I am very pleased at the close working between the new unit and A&E.

"It is providing the right services in the most appropriate way and we have all been overwhelmed by the commitment shown by what was a very new team."
