1938 - Kristallnacht, or Night of (Broken) Glass, took place. Nazis burned 267 synagogues and destroyed thousands of Jewish homes and businesses in Germany.

1953 - How to Marry a Millionaire was released, starring Marilyn Monroe.

1961 - Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd.

1989 - Bulldozers began demolishing the 28-year-old Berlin Wall, following the government's decision to allow unrestricted travel between East and West Germany.

1998 - It was reported that the Church of England's shares in the makers of Viagra had made them £3m in the previous three months.

2005 - Former TV magician Paul Daniels learnt that his Madame Tussauds waxwork was to be melted down because it scared children.
