The family of an elderly man from Orpington has thanked the two anonymous strangers who helped him to safety after his car broke down on a busy road.

John Cooper, 91, was driving to an appointment at a car garage in Bromley on Friday, September 7 at about 1.30pm when his engine struggled and he came to a stop in Crofton Road.

"It was on quite a nasty bend, right by the church," his daughter, Frances Maxwell, told News Shopper.

Mrs Maxwell added her father was left in a difficult situation and had to "just wait" for somebody to come to his aid after his car came to a stop - but luckily, two strangers jumped in to help.

After one woman got out of her car and tried to push Mr Cooper's car into a side road, he worried she would exert herself too much.

But before he knew it, a second woman in a separate car also got out and ran towards Mr Cooper to help push the car out of the busy road.

One of the women then called Mrs Maxwell - who was looking after her mother at the time - to let her know what had happened.

"[My father] was really really shocked that the two women came to help," Mrs Maxwell said.

"It was really nice of them to do that. Everybody moans about people but there are some really good people out there."

She added Mr Cooper - an ex pub landlord in Bromley for 40 years - had been so taken aback by the act of kindness, he forgot to ask the names of the women who helped him.

"We just want to say thank you to them," she said.
