The man behind the popular book 'The Bromley Boys', which was recently turned into a film, says crowdfunding for his new project is uncomfortable.

Dave Roberts is halfway through writing ‘The Long, Long Road to Wembley’ after being inspired by Bromley FC’s recent trip to the capital for the FA Trophy Cup Final.

Despite a heart-breaking penalty shootout defeat to Brackley Town, Dave had envisioned seeing his beloved team play on the famous Wembley turf since he was 13.

His fifth book will be published through the unfamiliar means of public crowdfunding.

Dave said on Monday (September 3) that writing was the easy part and asking for money was not in his comfort zone.

He wrote: “Having chosen the unbound crowdfunding model, time is split evenly between writing, daytime TV and begging people for money. The latter is something I'm finding really awkward.

“Sending emails asking for pledges is just as embarrassing whether it's to a good friend or a Facebook friend I barely know. The funny thing is that it's impossible to tell who is going to respond with a pledge.

“Total strangers have been incredibly generous, while those I was sure would throw in a few quid haven't even replied. But progress is steady.”

He has reached 20 per cent of his funding target after donations from 60 people – including his childhood hero and Bromley striker Alan Stonebridge.

Speaking about ‘The Long, Long Road to Wembley’, Dave told News Shopper last month: “It’s been a fantasy to watch Bromley at Wembley since I was a kid.

“So why not write a book on it?

“It is a beautifully designed hardback and is a sort of souvenir for Bromley fans who went to the final and those who followed the team in the years that led to it.”

The story starts in 1968 when Dave was queueing up for tea during half-time at Hayes Lane before he came across a photo of the Bromley team who won the 1949 FA Amateur Cup at Wembley.
