The percentage of Greenwich pupils achieving five or more A* to C GCSE grades has hit an all-time high.

PUPILS and teachers across Greenwich were "delighted" after all their hard work paid off.

The percentage of those achieving top grades reached 47 per cent, an increase of 3.7 per cent from last year.

Abbey Wood School, Eynsham Drive, which is closing in 2009 to make way for St Paul's Academy, was pleased to see a seven per cent jump from last year.

Among them was Moses Akintomide, who netted two A*s, four As, two Bs and one C.

Headteacher Sue Harry said: "As a school in challenging circumstances, we have again shown a big improvement.

"The headline figure of 42 per cent is the highest ever for the school and we are delighted."

The John Roan School, Maze Hill, Blackheath, was also celebrating success, after its five A* to C pass rate increased from 29 per cent last year to 44 per cent- a 15 per cent rise.

Headteacher Carl Dent said: "The school is very pleased and congratulates the students on their hard work and well- deserved success."

At Plumstead Manor School in Old Mill Road, 43.9 per cent of 227 pupils notched up five or more A* to Cs.

And 11 students achieved 89 A* or A grades between them.

Headteacher Jo Harding said: "Plumstead Manor has hit its target for GCSE A* to C grades and there have been some outstanding individual results."

Pupils at Thomas Tallis School, Kidbrooke Park Road, Blackheath, were also celebrating after their hard work paid off.

Two of the school's highest achievers were twins Georgina and Anna Lee, who achieved 20A*s and 2As between them.

Headteacher Rob Thomas said: "We are absolutely delighted with our GCSE reults.

"This is testimony to the serious approach our students took to their GCSE studies."

Thomas More, Eltham Hill, St Paul's Academy and St Ursula's Convent also had some of Greenwich's highest achieving pupils, scoring 67 per cent, 51 per cent, 82 per cent and 64 per cent at A* to C respectively.

At Kidbrooke School, 44 per cent of pupils were awarded five or more A* to C grades.

Kidbrooke Post-16 was also celebrating an overall pass rate for its 10 vocational courses of 85 per cent.

Woolwich Polytechnic saw a 39 per cent pass rate at GCSE grades A* to C.

Eltham Green saw a 3.9 per cent increase to 39 per cent.

Thirty-seven per cent of pupils at Blackheath Bluecoat CE achieved five or more A* to C grades, and at Crown Woods the figure was 42 per cent.
