A little boy with cerebral palsy has taken part in his first para-triathlon to raise money for local charities.

Six-year-old Owen Edwardes from Orpington has raised just over £2,500 for Petts Wood Playgroup, where he and his twin brother used to be pupils, and Bradbourne Group Riding for the Disabled Association.

The event took place on August 18 and Owen had some amazing support behind him.

Owen’s twin brother Miles played a very important role on the day of his brother’s challenge as part of the support crew and the most vocal supporter.

This isn’t the first time Owen has undertaken such a feat, at the beginning of this month Owen was even asked by British sprinter Jonnie Peacock to form part of his team for the Celebrity Superhero Tri.

He ran the last leg of the triathlon relay, 1km, in his walking frame and was joined by Jonnie and teammates Daisy and Danielle to cross the finish line for Team npower.

Every superhero needs a sidekick, so Owen’s mum Kirsty donned her own superhero outfit and joined him.

Kirsty said: “Owen isn’t able to swim more than 5m due to his disability so I towed him in an inflatable dinghy for the 150m swim section and then he cycled on his trike for 3km before doing a 1km push in his wheelchair.

“He was exhausted by the final stages but was determined to finish on his feet so he got out of his chair to run the last 20m unaided.”

Owen chose the charities he wanted to raise money for and gave himself a £200 target but this was exceeded quicker than anyone could have imagined.

Kirsty said: ““We are so proud of Owen for his fantastic achievement in completing the Superhero Triathlon!

"He has an unbelievable level of determination and never lets anything stop him from achieving what he wants to achieve and he has proved that again here. He really is an inspiration to those around him.”
