Plans have finally been submitted to transform a historic neglected building into a five-star hotel in Bromley.

The Royal Bell, a 17th century hostelry which was rebuilt in 1898, is located in Bromley High Street, and the former hotel is currently vacant and in a state of disrepair.

Different proposals have been put forward in the last few years including turning it into a community centre but nothing has ever materialised.

However, the new owners want the prestigious landmark to return to its former glory, with one neighbour calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”.

A planning application has now been submitted outlining details regarding the 50-bed hotel, which would be equipped with a gym and swimming pool.

If given the green light, a nine-storey annex will be constructed next to the hotel for additional space.

An existing stable block would be demolished and a new entrance constructed if Bromley Council permits the plans.

Ward councillor Nicky Dykes, a supporter of the project, told News Shopper: “The Royal Bell is a stunning building in the heart of our historic town centre that has sat unused for too long.

“This is an exciting application that could bring it back to its former glory for residents of Bromley to enjoy. We, as Bromley town councillors, look forward to looking at the application in more detail.”

The new owner of the property says a gym and swimming pool would be located on the basement level and a bar and restaurant at ground level.

Three hotel suites would be positioned on the third floor of the nine-storey building.

Neighbour Dan White wrote a letter of support for the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the town.

He said: “This could be a place the town can become truly proud of. If this gets rejected we could lose the Royal Bell forever.

“It’s been in decay for many years. The town could do with a luxury hotel in the centre.”
