A man in his late 20s has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences after a car ploughed into pedestrians in Westminster.

The silver Ford Fiesta crashed into several people and cyclists before hitting barriers outside the Houses of Parliament this morning (Tuesday).

Two people were taken to hospital after being injured at the scene. While a man has been discharged, a woman is still in hospital for serious injuries.

However, her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Fiesta was arrested at the scene by armed police. He is currently in custody in a south London police station.

There was nobody else in the vehicle and no weapons were found, the Met Police said.

Assistant commissioner in the Met Police, Neil Basu, has said the force is treating the incident as an act of terror due to the fact it appears to be a deliberate act.

According to Met Police intelligence, there is no indication that there is a further threat to Londoners or the rest of the UK.

While officers from the Counter Terrorism Command try to establish the suspect's motives, they have said he is "not currently cooperating."

The Met has issued an urgent appeal to the public to get in touch with any information they think might be helpful.

Anyone who can help is urged to call police on 0800 789 321. Those who might have footage of the crash is urged to upload them to www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk

Parliament Square is currently being treated as a crime scene, and police have warned cordons will be in place "for some time."

Police have said they are working to clear the area as soon as possible but have asked people to avoid the area in the meantime.
