A fire which broke out in a flat above a pub is believed to be due to an electrical fault in a television, according to the London Fire Brigade.

Firefighters rushed to The Crown Sutton pub in the Sutton High Street, at the junction with Crown Road, shortly after 8pm on August 5.

Dramatic images published online showed visible flames from a window on the first floor of the building.

Now a London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokeswoman has said the cause of the incident was “accidental”, resulting from an electrical fault in a TV.

This was in the flat above the pub.

Witness Leah Bernard said: “I was on the bus when I saw black smoke and just stood there. There wasn’t that much of a crowd.

“The smoke was really thick and was gushing out quite fast, I moved to the front and could see the flame coming out of the window and rubble falling off the side of the building.

“Then I saw a man run in – everyone was shouting ‘no!’ – then not long after someone ran in after him.”

She added that firefighters arrived roughly 10 minutes later, with the blaze reportedly under control minutes before 9pm, according to the fire brigade.

A LFB spokeswoman said there were no reports of any injuries.

People also took to social media after having reported to have seen the fire.

One person wrote: “Hope everyone is okay. Such a shame, The Crown is a lovely pub.”

The Craft Union Pub Company, which manages The Crown Sutton, has been approached for further comment.
