Lewisham Council has agreed to meet with owners of a Little Nan’s Bar in Catford over an ongoing eviction dispute.

This comes after the council defended its decision to evict the bar over concerns involving noise.

Little Nan’s Bar in the Broadway Theatre was recently told by the council they would be invoking a two year break clause in their licence to occupy the space from February 2019.

Councillor Brenda Dacres then released a statement apologising for not making the reasons of the eviction clearer.

These issues are related to noise complaints, poor ventilation and the only lift in the theatre often being obstructed inside the bar.

However, bar owners will now meet with Cllr Dacres, Cabinet Member for Parks, Neighbourhoods and Transport, on Tuesday (July 14) to try and resolve the dispute which has attracted a huge response on social media.

Over 3,000 people have signed a petition calling for Lewisham Council to reverse the decision.

Tristan Scutt, one of the owners of the bar, told News Shopper: “Sadly, early last week, through a post on the Council’s website it was made evident to the public that there was a possibility that our licence to operate at the Broadway Theatre was to be revoked."

He added: "Unfortunately, for some time and despite our best efforts, we have faced considerable challenges in getting our landlord to fulfil promises made on a number of issues.

“They have let us down on many of them. We took on the space on the basis that there would be collaboration and communication to enable the theatre and Little Nan’s to operate effectively side by side. Lewisham Council employees have been reluctant to do this."

However, despite being “very disappointed” with how Lewisham Council has handled the eviction, he said he was looking forward to the meeting with Cllr Dacres.

“We welcome the opportunity of holding a meeting next week to tell her why we wish to remain at the heart of Catford’s regeneration as originally intended and to help find positive solutions to the breakdown of our partnership and the inevitable but not unsurmountable operating difficulties that come with an 80 year old building.”

Cllr Dacres said last week: “We have given Little Nan’s as much notice as possible so that they are able to find another venue in the local area.

“Council officers are also looking at other options at the moment and will work with them to find an alternative space that is suitable for them.”

News Shopper has tried to contact the councillor to ask what the purpose of next week’s meeting is.
