A sprinting sensation from Orpington has become queen of Europe after breaking a British record to claim a gold medal.

Dina Asher-Smith, 22, struck gold in the 100m final on day one of the 2018 European Athletics Championships in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The Blackheath and Bromley Harriers sprinter broke her own national record to finish the race in 10.85 seconds.

After the race she said she was determined to become European Champion and was thrilled to have smashed her record.

It was also the fastest recorded time so far this year.

Dina said: “Thank you all so much, so much for the support both online and from all those screaming last night in the stadium.”

She added that she was still pinching herself and was now focusing on her next race.

Councillor Peter Fortune tweeted his congratulations to the “amazing” gold medallist.

He added: “Beyond all that brilliance Dina donated a load of prizes to help children looked after in Bromley last week.”
