A mum from Thamesmead has described her horror after suffering burns when a portable phone charger "melted onto her skin".

Jackie Hudspith bought the charger from Dragons Vape in Thamesmead last Friday for her partner, because he was about to go on holiday.

"He didn't want to take it so I thought: 'I'll use it myself'," she told News Shopper.

Ms Hudspith added she used the charger on her phone for the first time and had no problems with it.

But the second time she powered up her device, she claims the charger overheated and melted all over her skin.

"I just screamed. I thought: 'What have I done?'," she said.

As the molten plastic spilled onto her arms and her bedsheets, Ms Hudspith says she ran out of the house and into the garden to dump it.

According to Ms Hudspith, her mother - who was in the house at the time - could smell the fumes from where the charger had melted.

She was left with several burns to her elbows, arms and fingers.

After realising how badly she had been burnt, Ms Hudspith did "the only thing I could do" and ran her arms and hands under cold water. The next day, she went to see a doctor who bandaged her up.

Tasal Mohammad, who owns the Dragons Vape shop where Ms Hudspith bought the charger, told News Shopper he was helping his customer after her ordeal.

"I don't know what happened. It seemed to explode, but I'm not the manufacturer," Mr Mohammad said.

He added he has put Ms Hudspith in touch with the manufacturer so she can pursue a complaint.

Mr Mohammad also told News Shopper he has not had any problems reported to him about this product before, but he will now stop selling the chargers.

The charger's manufacturer could not be contacted for comment.
