Police say they are in touch with animal charities in Kent after a horse's head was reportedly found on the road in Hextable.
The head, believed to have been found in a bin bag in Guilden Hill, was reported to police when it was discovered.
After photos of the grisly find were posted on Facebook, nearby pet owners expressed their disgust.
One man said: "That's awful, my mind is blown to think someone would do something so heinous."
Another woman urged dog walkers in the area to be extra vigilant while out with their pets.
A Kent Police spokeswoman confirmed: "Police were alerted to an incident in which it is reported a horse’s head was found in a bin bag.
"The report was received at 8.52am on Friday, August 3.
"Officers from the rural task force have been made aware of the report who have liaised with Horse Watch and the British Horse Society."
