Swanley councillors have hit back at proposals for a housing development in the village in a fiery letter sent to Sevenoaks District Council.

The outline put forward in Sevenoaks Council’s Local Plan proposes building 750 homes on a site between Beechenlea Lane and the railway line.

Residents in the area are being invited to comment on the draft proposal on the district council’s website and give their opinions before plans are finalised.

However, in response to the draft, Swanley Town Council has penned a scathing objection which rejects all options for the development – claiming its own plans will meet building requirements.

In the letter, the council attacks plans for causing “desecration of this land” which it believes will “negatively impact on air quality and traffic levels.”

One of its main concerns is the type of land proposed for the site, which Swanley describes as “the highest quality of agricultural land that Sevenoaks district has."

According to Swanley Council, produce farmed on the land is often delivered to the town’s Asda store. It argues this reduces the town’s carbon footprint.

Among the points made in the letter, Swanley hits back at Sevenoaks Council for “attempting to re-write the history” of their objections in past meetings – during which Swanley councillors said the land proposed was unsuitable for development.

Responding to the objection, a spokesman from Sevenoaks Council confirmed the plans were draft proposals and the consultation period is open.

He added: “The Government has told us we must plan for nearly 14,000 new homes in the district to meet our future housing and infrastructure needs up to 2035.

“To help achieve this, landowners have been invited to put forward sites for new housing, schools and other infrastructure and we are consulting on the most suitable sites."

Residents from across the district are being asked to give their views on the and the consultation is open until September 10. Go to www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/draftlocalplan
