Lewisham Council has announced a bar in the Broadway Theatre will be closing down because of being "unsuitable" for the space.

Little Nan’s Bar at the theatre in Catford received the eviction notice this morning, and managers have been trying to contact the council since for an explanation.

A spokesman from the bar told News Shopper: "We were chosen by the council to take on the space in Catford nearly two years ago, and we have invested a lot of our own love, determination and money to create a happy and safe place for all to enjoy in this public building.

"We have just received a letter with a termination of our lease notice by the end of the year. We have tried to contact the individuals in the council who have actioned this, but they are currently not wanting to speak to us about the matter.

"We have been given no reason as to the eviction. This is such sad news and we are so upset by this, as we love Catford so much."

A spokesman for Lewisham Council explained the decision: “We had hoped Little Nan’s Bar would be a long-standing fixture in the Broadway Theatre, however since opening in February 2017 it has become increasingly apparent that the space is unsuitable for their needs.

"We remain committed to supporting local businesses and recognise the value of Little Nan’s Bar in bringing their distinct and popular brand to the heart of Catford and would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment.

“We have offered to work with them to explore other spaces in Catford they could relocate to that would offer them greater freedom to operate and would be more suited to the club vibe they offer.”
