The horse-and-cart rider who was hit and killed in Eastern Way in Thamesmead was the nephew of TV star Paddy Doherty, it has emerged.

Mikey Connors, 30, died on Saturday morning after being knocked off his cart while riding it down the A2016.

Mr Connors was pronounced dead at the scene.

The horse he was riding was put to sleep by a vet after it was seriously injured in the crash with a car.

Mr Connors' friends and family have posted tributes on Facebook, some praying for him to get "the best bed in heaven".

On Twitter, Roseanne Doherty, the wife of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star Paddy Doherty, said: "Paddy's nephew Mikey Connors died this morning in [an] accident."

She added the family was "in shock" and "can't believe" what happened.

Paddy Doherty and his family rose to fame in the Channel 4 TV show which followed members of the travelling community.

The loss of his nephew comes just months after Mr Doherty's mother died in April of "a broken heart" following the death of his father in 2017.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after Mr Connors was killed.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident and to anyone who may have dashcam footage.

Anyone who can help is urged to call the serious collision investigation unit based at Catford Garage on 0208 285 1574, quoting CAD 2164/28JUL.
