A Greenwich councillor accused of fraud has been suspended from her responsibilities outside the council.

At a general purposes meeting last week, it was agreed that Cllr Tonia Ashikodi would be temporarily suspended from outside bodies.

The decision comes after the Glyndon Ward councillor was charged earlier this month.

Ashikodi will appear at Bexleyheath Magistrates’ Court on August 6.

The councillor, first elected in 2016, has been charged with two offences of fraud by false representation, and jointly with another, an offence of perverting the course of justice.

At a meeting on Thursday, the council leader Dan Thorpe and committee members agreed to temporarily remove Ashikodi from the Woolwich and Plumstead Relief in Sickness Fund, Greenwich Services Plus, Greenwich Service Solutions and Woolwich and District YMCA.

It comes following confirmation from Cllr Thorpe at a recent full council meeting that Ashikodi has been administratively suspended by the national Labour Party.

Cllr Thorpe said at the time: “Given Miss Ashikodi’s position as a Greenwich councillor, there has been speculation. As a consequence of the charges, Tonia Ashikodi was administratively suspended from the Labour group by the national Labour party pending the outcome of the judicial process.

“Clearly it is of paramount importance that Miss Ashikodi’s fundamental legal rights to respond to the charges and to receive the hearing are respected.”
