A drink-driver has been locked up for leaving another driver with life-changing injuries after a crash near Northfleet.

Vladimir Skljar, 30, from Lordswood in Kent, was jailed for two years and 10 months after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink-driving.

Skljar was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when he crashed into an oncoming vehicle while trying to overtake another car in London Road last September.

After driving up a slope in the road, he went into the wrong lane and crashed head-on into the victim, who was driving in the opposite direction.

The victim, a man in his 40s, is still being treated for serious leg injuries he sustained in the crash.

When Skljar was breathalysed at the scene, his reading was 82 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Investigating officer Sergeant Jason Heather said: "Skljar’s reckless decision to drink alcohol before driving has ruined the life of an innocent man who was going about his daily business.

"The victim is still living with the consequences of Skljar’s poor judgement and it is likely he will be impacted by his injuries for the rest of his life.

"No custodial sentence will undo the damage Skljar has caused but I hope the victim can feel assured that justice has now been served.

"Drink-driving is one of the five most common causes of a serious or fatal road collision.

"If you choose to drive after drinking, you are inexcusably choosing to intentionally endanger someone else’s life and can expect to be prosecuted."

As well as jail time, Skljar was also banned from driving for four years and five months.
