Brockley musician Novelist has been nominated for the prestigious 2018 Mercury Prize next to bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and Florence and The Machine.

Kojo Kankam, who is 21 and better known for his stage name Novelist, is a grime MC and producer.

He is on the shortlist of the 2018 Mercury Prize for his debut album Novelist Guy.

The Mercury Prize Albums of the Year celebrates and promotes the best of UK music recognising artistic achievement across a range of contemporary music genres.

The judges said: “This year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize celebrates albums by musicians at all stages of their careers, but with a shared belief in the importance of music for navigating life’s challenges – whether personal or political, falling in or out of love, growing up or looking back, angry or ecstatic. The music here is funny and inspiring, smart and moving. Twelve amazing albums!"

The award show will take place on September 20 at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith with live performances from the artists themselves.

The prize’s broadcast partner, BBC Music, will be providing live television and radio coverage of the event on BBC Four and BBC Radio 6 Music.

Kojo has performed with the likes of Skepta and Major Lazer as well as featuring on BBC Radio 1Xtra in a documentary about Grime.
