An Eltham resident wants to warn others after two suspicious women turned up at her door late at night claiming to be from Cancer Research.

Adele Greenwall, of Westhorne Avenue, took to Facebook after the pair called at 10.25pm.

She told News Shopper: “My husband got up and answered the door to find two women standing there.

“The one that spoke was biggish built approximately 5ft 8in, wearing a tracksuit. She had mousey brown hair and it was in a ponytail. The other lady stood back so my husband didn't really see her.”

Adele wanted to warn other residents because she had recently seen a similar Facebook post in which someone ran off with a resident's £20 note.

This post read: “I would like to let you all know there is a lady going door to door for children with cancer to go to Disneyland beware she is a thief my husband was going to give £5 he gave her a £20 note and before he got his change she was out the gate and gone just wanted to make people aware of it.”

Adele continued: “They had no ID. He said I donate online and her response was 'OK love' and then they walked off towards Yorkshire Grey roundabout.”

Lots of people have responded to Adele with similar stories and it seems many residents have reported them to the police.

Lynn Daly, a Cancer Research spokeswoman, said: "If you think that people are carrying out rogue fundraising (i.e. fundraising without our consent/knowledge), then we would encourage you to report any potentially suspicious behaviour to the police.

"We will then work with the police to try to resolve the situation, and keep you updated with the outcome.

"All genuine Cancer Research UK fundraisers wear a blue Cancer Research UK branded t-shirt or jacket and a photo ID badge that will be visible at all times.

"They will inform you that they are a paid professional fundraiser raising money for Cancer Research UK.

"If you do decide to donate, they’ll also give you the details of the campaign they’re working on and how much money we’re hoping to raise. You should then receive a welcome call within a few days of committing to a regular gift."
