A man has been arrested in Sidcup after he was chased down by police as part of a crackdown on the use of laughing gas.

The 19-year-old was spotted loitering in a car around Riverside Road with another man while police were on patrol.

According to officers, lots of complaints are made about people using laughing gas and dumping the canisters by a nearby field.

When the two men in the car were approached, they fled and started to run across the fields.

Sidcup police's Facebook account praised its officers for chasing down the pair in 30 degree heat and full uniform, after the two men were finally apprehended.

The 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing class B drugs.

The use of laughing gas has raised concerns in the borough over the last few weeks, as empty canisters which are used to distribute the substance - also known as nitrous oxide - have been spotted strewn around the areas.

Police have said they will continue to patrol the Riverside Road area to tackle the problem.
