A soon to be 96-year-old woman who lost her husband in December has made a floral tribute to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

Babs Pilbeam married John Digman, who went on to become a navigation specialist in the RAF, in 1944.

John passed away on December 11, 2017 after a devoting most of his career to the force.

The couple had been living in a residential care home in Chislehurst where Babs remains.

Ever since his death, Babs has rekindled her passion for flower arranging to help her deal with the sad loss of her husband.

Her daughter, Jill Kratochvil, 67, told News Shopper: “We miss him a lot and obviously we do things to keep his memory very much alive.

“My mum has been doing a lot of flower arranging since his passing. It is a very good therapy for her. This flower arrangement was special because of the RAF.

“It is sad my dad didn’t survive to see the 100 year anniversary celebration.”

Babs's latest floral arrangement is in the RAF colours of red, blue and white.

"She is very happy with it," Jill said.

"But because she is a perfectionist she always feels she could have done it better."

Jill described her dad as a very modest man and said his nursing home was shocked to learn about his career in the RAF.

"He just kept it to himself," Jill said. "The nursing home only found out after his death. They were very fond of him."

Digman played an integral role in the Second World War before later becoming president of the Orpington Branch of the RAF Association.

Before his long career as a navigation specialist he was an instructor in the bomber-training unit.

He once commented about his role in the war: “My abiding memory is of feeling extremely apprehensive when nearing the target area and then of hearing the calm voice of the master bomber over the radio who was directing the pathfinders in marking the target. His measured tones helped no end in settling my mind.”
