One England fan epitomised the mood of the nation last night as he watched the nerve wrenching penalty shootout on his phone.

“We will shortly be arriving at Beckenham junction,” the train tannoy announced moments before Eric Dier broke Columbian hearts and sent England fans into exhilaration.

The man, who appeared to be travelling home from work, could barely look at his phone as he clenched his fists before piously giving the sign of the cross.

Seconds from potential heartbreak or World Cup glory, the man's body language perfectly summed up the draining emotions of being a football fan.

The Beckenham commuter leapt from his seat when England struck the winning penalty before shaking his fists in joy.

“Have they won? Have they won?” the woman filming asked the thrilled commuter.

Not yet able to speak after England ended decades of tournament penalty shootout pain, the man nodded a relieved yes.

“Thank god I had this guy on the train, chuffing brilliant,” Kharis Genesia George, who filmed the fan, said.

England's young stars will play Sweden on Saturday in the quarter finals.

Fingers crossed the man in the video is afforded a day off work to enjoy the game with like minded fanatics.
