The Blackwall Tunnel approach was closed last night due to a car engulfed in flames.
Photos emerged around 5.30pm last night of a car on the A102 Blackwall Lane completely covered in flames.
Traffic came to a standstill as the approach was blocked off.
The vehicle caused traffic chaos during rush hour and closed the road for several hours as emergency services surveyed the scene to make sure it was safe.
People travelling to and from Greenwich had to sit in standstill traffic in scorching temperatures.
The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police were at the scene and have been approached for comment.
It was a bad rush hour for commuters across south east London as well as north Kent.
The Dartford Crossing was also closed at around 4.30pm due to concerns for the welfare of a man.
One commuter tweeted: "It took so long to get home today, Dartford Tunnel was closed so we were diverted to Blackwall Tunnel which then also closed, so we were sat in traffic for hours!"
Another said: "29degrees....18weeks preggers and mega uncomfortable.....2.5hr drive home coz the Blackwall Tunnel was closed......stand back and approach with caution."
