A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in Greenwich this morning (June 23).

Police were called at around 11.30am to a property in Tunnel Avenue where a woman, believed to be in her 50s, was found dead in the back garden with stab wounds.

A man in his 50s was then arrested at the same property on suspicion of murder and is being held at a south London police station.

The Met Police said it was believed the woman and arrested man had known each other but confirmed the incident was not thought to be domestic.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for tomorrow afternoon (June 24) at Greenwich Mortuary.

A statement from Met Police said: "Officers believe they know the identity of the woman and are in the process of informing next of kin.

"Although the incident is not thought to be domestic, detectives believe the deceased and the man arrested were known to each other.

"Anyone with information that may assist police should call detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command on 020 8721 4054."

Cordons remain in place at the scene of the incident in Tunnel Avenue.
