New Cross station is closed this morning after paramedics were unable to save a man who had been hit by a train.

Southeastern announced emergency services were dealing with an incident between London Bridge and Hither Green at around 8am this morning (Tuesday).

Shortly after this announcement, it was confirmed that New Cross station had been closed.

Hayes, Bexleyheath, Sidcup, Woolwich, Grove Park and Hastings lines are all suffering from major disruption, with some trains being diverted to alternative London stations.

Tickets are being accepted on the London Underground via reasonable routes and on some buses between Dartford and Lewisham.

A spokesman from British Transport Police confirmed: "We were called to New Cross station at 7.55 to reports a man had been struck by a train.

"Paramedics also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The circumstances are not thought to be suspicious at this time. His next of kin have been informed."

MORE: Southeastern responds with sarcastic tweet after moan about delays due to person hit by train

A joint statement from Southeastern and Network Rail about this morning's delays said: “Sadly, a person hit by a train between London Bridge and Hither Green, as well as emergency engineering work on the North Kent line near Gravesend meant that many trains running into London were affected by severe disruption this morning. We’re sorry for any inconvenience that this caused.

“We’re working to restore services to normal, and recognise that some people would have had difficult journeys into work.

"We’d encourage anyone who experienced a delay of 30 minutes or more to claim Delay Repay via the Southeastern website.”
