When is Father’s Day?

Father’s Day will be held on June 17 this year. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June but it has not been around for that long. The 17th is the US date for the celebration but many European countries have adopted the day.

Why do we celebrate it?

It is a day to celebrate fathers and parental figures and celebrating fatherhood and parental bonds. In Catholic Europe that day has in the past been celebrated on March 19.

Where does it come from?

Father's Day was actually invented by a woman. Sonora Smart Dodd proposed the idea in Washington in 1910. Her mother had died and her father was a civil war veteran and so it only seemed fair to have a Father's Day.

How is it usually celebrated?

Father’s Day is a good time to get the whole family together and give cards and gifts to the paternal figures in the family.

According to greetings card makers Hallmark, Father’s Day is the fifth-largest card-sending holiday.

In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated differently from other parts of the world. Männertag (Men’s day) is celebrated by getting drunk with wagons of beer and indulging in regional food.

More than 1.5 billion fathers will be celebrated on Father's Day.

In 2008 thousands of primary pupils in Scotland were prevented from making Father's Day cards at school for fear of embarrassing classmates who lived with single mothers.
