Victorian STIs are making a comeback and this is what you need to know about what’s lurking.

Good news everyone, despite living in a world where we can now talk to people on the other side of the world immediately, buy robots and become famous on the internet, the great Victorian sexually transmitted infections are apparently making a comeback.

Syphilis and gonorrhoea have increased by 20 per cent in the last year and this is from a rise in unprotected sex.

Public Health England has revealed that reported incidents of syphilis have gone from 5,955 in 2016 to 7,137 in 2017 and gonorrhoea went from 36,577 to 44,676.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can be life threatening and damage your brain, heart and nervous system and gonorrhoea can make you infertile.

Speaking of the figures, Dr Olwen Williams, president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, said: "These dramatic increases in syphilis and gonorrhoea are a huge concern and must provide a wake-up call to the Government about the importance of ensuring that high-quality, easily-accessible sexual health services are available for all those who need them.

Falling standards of living are being blamed for this increase in the Victorian diseases, with rickets, gout, syphilis and scarlet fever all on the rise.
