Kids of the 90s can rejoice as Pogs are coming back - but this time they will be digital.

Anyone over the age of 25 will surely remember the Pog phenomenon founded on the playground.

Now it is being turned into an app on mobile phones.

The Pogs game will see players collect the colourful discs, use the ‘slammer’ and compete in an international leaderboard, all from their smartphone or tablet.

The app will use AR technology to allow players to scan real-world items into the game to complete Pog sets and unlock content.

But what are Pogs?

Pogs started as a playground game using cardboard bottle caps. The Pogs themselves are about the size of a poker chip with images on both sides.

To play Pogs you need a slammer, which is a heavier game piece such as metal or plastic.

Find a flat surface and stack your Pogs, image side up.

First player throws their slammer at their opponent's stack. The ones that land face-up go to that player and the rest go back in the stack.

Whoever has the most Pogs wins.

Lifelong Pogs fan and the brains behind the comeback, entrepreneur Sam Park, said: “I was a huge fan of Pogs as a kid and put so much energy into cultivating my prized stack of discs.

"A group of friends and I were reminiscing about our favourite 90s games one evening and it sparked the idea to try and bring the game back, but this time making it digital.”

The app is in its final stages of development and if it gets enough funding it will be available from September.

People who put their weight behind the campaign will receive a limited-edition slammer that can be scanned into the app using AR and used to take on opponents in the game.

The game will be free to play and users will be able to compete with others around the world, including in global Pog tournaments, where real-life prizes will be up for grabs.

The Pogs Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign is live now.
