Bromley Council has paid a family £2,865 for the stress caused after cutting a disabled man's support package.

The man, aged in his 20s, received one-to-one care, transport costs and a placement in a care centre for his autism and other needs.

But Bromley Council scrapped this in 2015 - leaving the man's mum to support her son over the holidays.

A council spokesman said: "We acknowledge there was an administrative error in this case and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"We are currently reviewing the whole area of care charges and the information supplied to service users and their families. In addition, there have been significant improvements to the complaints handling process, including a major upgrade to the bespoke IT system used, which means that the Council is confident that such a situation is highly unlikely to recur."

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, Michael King, said he was pleased with the council plans to improve its services.

He added: "Families with significant care needs like this rely on the right support being provided in the right way, and at the right time. Councils cannot change care packages at short notice and without making the proper assessments."

In 2015 the council reduced the number of hours they paid for one-to-one care without reassessing the man.

This was at the same time as the man's day-centre closed. Bromley Council failed to find an alternative placement or fund replacement care.

When they did fund the care it was not in consistent amounts or at fixed times. The payment was suspended for 17 months before they backdated the money into a holding account, which the mother could not access.

Bromley Council has promised to review how it handles holding accounts.
