The new mayor of Bexley has said he wants to prioritise supporting people with mental illness in the borough after he took the role this week.

Cllr Brian Bishop, who represents the Barnehurst Ward, was appointed mayor on Wednesday, May 23.

After his appointment, Cllr Bishop said he was committed to providing adult social care and protecting vulnerable children and the elderly.

He added: "In particular, I am really keen to support those in our borough who suffer daily with mental health issues and children with Autism, my charity appeal this year will raise funds for our residents affected by such difficulties."

The new Mayoress, Christine Bishop, wants to continue offering public service across the borough. She has previously held the role of senior support worker with the Crossroads charity - which supports carers.

Now she has been appointed mayoress, Mrs Bishop wants to meet as many residents as they can, and to leave all residents "a little happier" after meeting them.
