Plans for a major redevelopment scheme including a 17-storey tower in Abbey Wood are set to be given the go ahead by Greenwich councillors.

Developers JMH Group have proposed the demolition of a car wash and a pet hospital in place of four new housing blocks in Eynsham Drive.

The towers – close to Lidl – would be three, eight, 14, and 17-storeys tall, and bring a combined 272 homes.

Room for a new pet home has also been included in the plans, as well as space for shops, restaurants and 59 car parking spaces.

According to planning documents, 35 per cent of the homes would be affordable, split between 70 per cent social rent and 30 per cent  shared ownership.

Concerns had been raised about the height and density of the plans, but officers at Greenwich Council have earmarked it to be approved by councillors at a meeting on June 4.

According to the council report: “The site lies within the Thamesmead and Abbey Wood Opportunity Area, as designated by the London Plan, which has an indicative employment capacity of 4,000 jobs and capacity to deliver a minimum of 3,000 new homes.”

With Crossrail set to open in December, Abbey Wood has been subject to big redevelopments to cope with the expected growth.

Greenwich Council has a target of delivering 2,595 new homes a year to keep up with demand.

If this scheme is given the green light as expected, the Council will pocket £1,259,415.31 in a Community Infrastructure Levy – cash charged by council’s for developments that is spent on infrastructure, facilities and services.

The developers said in their application: “Currently Thamesmead can be considered a deprived area generally made up of low-middle income residents.

“With four planning applications submitted in May 2016 following months of consultation with local residents, businesses and the council, these future residential mixed-use developments include commercial floor-space offering cafes, retail and local enterprise spaces which will create new jobs and opportunities in the area.

“This will increase employment opportunities within Abbey Wood.”

The majority of flats would be two bedroom, with just 28 three bedroom homes included in the plans, along with 109 one-bedroom flats and three studios.
