Plans to knock down part of a derelict pub and build a new block of flats in its place have been approved by Dartford Council.

The rear of the Two Brewers Pub, which has been closed for several years, is to be transformed into a five-storey building containing 11 flats as well as a car park.

Among the plans are the demolition of the existing building behind the pub in Lowfield Street in Dartford town centre.

Once the building has been knocked down, work is planned to start building the new block of flats, which will hold one three-bedroom, six one-bedroom and four two-bedroom flats.

According to plans submitted, part of the Two Brewers will be kept in place, and more space will be created "for the use of the existing public house", suggesting the pub is earmarked to re-open as part of the regeneration.

Lowfield Street has been a site targeted by developers over the years but plans had suffered several setbacks.

Plans to demolish part of the street to build a Tesco were delayed for several years before eventually being cancelled.

In March 2017, plans to regenerate the street were finally given the go-ahead, after plans from Meyer Homes to build 188 homes were approved by the council.

At the time the plans were approved, councillors hailed the regeneration as "a new lease of life" for the street.

The first phase of regeneration on the street is expected to be completed by 2019.
