Bexley Council has promised to take action after one of its own employees was caught on camera flicking a cigarette butt onto the ground.

Footage shared with News Shopper shows two workers wearing high-vis jackets sitting on motorbikes in a car park.

After one of the officers drives away, the other is pictured flicking a cigarette butt on the floor.

The woman who filmed the video told News Shopper she believed the people in the footage filmed in Northumberland Heath were litter enforcement officers.

Over the past few years, Bexley Council has initiated a crackdown on littering in the borough.

News Shopper recently revealed the council had collected more than £300,000 in littering fines since the clampdown on rubbish was introduced two years ago.

A spokeswoman from Bexley Council confirmed the worker in the footage is employed by the council, but is not a litter enforcement officer.

She said: "Bexley has a zero-tolerance policy towards those who litter.

"We can confirm that the person seen dropping litter in the video is not an environmental enforcement officer engaged in litter enforcement work.

"The person concerned is a civil enforcement officer employed by APCOA, our parking enforcement contractor.

"We are currently carrying out a full investigation with APCOA, and follow-up action will be taken, including the issue on the person concerned of a £150 fixed penalty notice fine for littering."
