There are fears burglars could be striking at homes in Eltham after a resident found a "target-like" mark near his back gate.

The incident was reported in Southend Close and people have been warned to be on their guard.

Burglars are known to mark properties with a symbol to tell other thieves which houses could be best to break into.

A post on the Eltham SE9 Facebook group read: “Will everyone around the Southend Close and surroundings check your back gates for markers I went out my back gate to find a log with a white mark against it like a target mark don’t no if I’m being targeted for a burglary.”

So what can you do to keep your property safe?

Check your windows are locked. Then double check, there is always one that you forgot about.

Get some deadbolts fitted on your front door, garage and conservatory.

Make sure your alarm is on and up-to-date.

Get lots of exterior lights that are motion-sensored.

Put timers on your inside lighting.

According to the Property Guard Master website, most break-ins are through a first-floor window or the front door, so pay close attention.

What else can you look out for?

New cars on the street, possibly someone who keeps coming back and not leaving their car.

People walking up and down roads looking at houses in more detail than a normal person would.

Someone taking photos and then walking away.

Religious/charity workers without any accreditation on them.

Please be careful and take extra care when locking up your house and if you suspect something, tell someone.
