The first footage has been released of Elizabeth line trains being tested from Abbey Wood to Canary Wharf.

The video shows trains being driven on the new line's central section, filmed from the perspective of the control room.

While it zooms along under the city at about 60mph, you can see the inside of the brand new tunnels built into the system.

Officers in high-vis jackets are sitting in the control room of one of the new trains as it travels along the route.

There is also snapshot of one of the brand new train carriages, which has an open plan all the way down the train.

The central part of the route is operated by an automatic train control system.

According to Crossrail, which is the company building the new railway, the project is now in its "final stages" after overhead power equipment in the tunnels was installed.

Since the power was switched on between Westbourne Park and Stepney on the line, Crossrail says the Elizabeth line tunnels are now "fully energised".

It is expected the project will be handed over to Transport for London "later this year" before the line is opened in December.

Mark Wild, managing director of London Underground and the Elizabeth line, said: “With just seven months to go until the opening of the Elizabeth line, which will transform travel across the city, it’s great to see testing ramping up beneath the streets of London.

"The brand new trains that will provide better, quicker and more comfortable journeys for hundreds of thousands of people each day are now running through the tunnels at speeds of up to 60mph.

"Much more hard work is still to be done on completing stations, testing signalling and training staff. This is now under way to ensure that people can enjoy the Elizabeth line for the first time in December.”

When the route is completed, it will travel through 41 stations from Reading and Heathrow in the west, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
