An empty gym in Bromley is set to be turned into a foodbank centre.

Bromley Borough Foodbank has asked the council to use the former Crossfit Gym in Stockwell Close as a new distribution centre.

It says it needs a central hub to store donations before they are taken to the four individual branches.

It’s expected the centre would have 10 deliveries a day.

According to planning documents, the scheme has been earmarked for approval by the council – which owns the land.

Officers said: “It is not considered, subject to planning conditions, that the proposal would result in an unacceptable intensive use of the site and traffic generation within Stockwell Close that might interfere with the freeflow of traffic to and from the Civic Centre Car Park.

“The site is well-separated from nearby residential dwellings, and the use would have no greater impact in terms of highways impacts and upon residential amenity than the former uses of the site as an indoor soft play centre/gymnasium.”

Bromley Borough Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust, which last year delivered more than 1.3m food parcels to an estimated 666,000 people.

The use of foodbanks nationally has surged 13 per cent in the last year.
