Tesco has announced that it will close it’s online shop for clothes, homeware, furniture and electricals on July 9.

The supermarket's Tesco Direct site will be closing and you will not be able to buy from the website after this date.

The closing of the site will put 500 jobs at risk and leave thousands disappointed when it comes to their online shopping habits.

It cited a number of "significant challenges", including high costs for fulfilment and online marketing, which have prevented it from delivering a "sustainable offer as a standalone non-food business".

A Tesco spokesman said: “Our main website, tesco.com, will continue to sell grocery products as usual, alongside a selected range of items that were previously available on Tesco Direct.

“A large range of clothing, homewares, electricals, toys and gifts will continue to be available in-store too.”

Charles Wilson, Tesco's UK and Ireland boss, said: "We want to offer our customers the ability to buy groceries and non-food products in one place and that's why we are focusing our investment into one online platform.

"This decision has been a very difficult one to make, but it is an essential step towards establishing a more sustainable non-food offer and growing our business for the future."
