A leaked list claims to show which Mothercare stores are set to close - and it could be bad news for south-east London.

The retailer has said it will not confirm whether the list is genuine but it does contain the names of 50 stores, which is the number the mother-and-baby chain announced it would be axing.

The stores nearest the Shopper patch allegedly closing are Bexleyheath, Eltham and Bromley.

A spokesman for Mothercare said: ““We can’t comment on individual store closures. We regret having to close stores and the impact this will have on colleagues. However, we had no alternative to executing a CVA (company voluntary arrangement).

“The business was in an unsustainable situation and was in clear need of an appropriate resolution and last week’s comprehensive measures provide a renewed and stable financial structure for the business, and will allow Mothercare to accelerate its adaptation to the shifting dynamic towards online.”

The closure of the stores will result in hundreds of job losses.

Mothercare employs about 3,000 people across 137 outlets.

As part of its restructuring, which also sees the re-hiring of chief executive Mark Newton Jones who was sacked just a weeks ago, Mothercare also announced a refinancing package worth up to £113.5 million.
