Lewisham councillors and proposed cabinet members Joe Dromey and Kevin Bonavia have announced their candidacy in the parliamentary by-election in Lewisham East.

Councillor Dromey and councillor Bonavia both announced the move on Twitter on Thursday.

Mr Dromey has been nominated as cabinet member for finance, skills and jobs as a job-share with councillor Amanda de Ryk.

Mr Bonavia has been nominated as cabinet member for democracy, refugees and accountability, which will see him lead mayor Damien Egan’s local democracy review.

They join newly-elected Lewisham councillor Sakina Sheikh – who announced her candidacy the same day former Lewisham East MP Heidi Alexander stood down – and councillor for New Cross, Brenda Dacres.

Mr Dromey said he was a “passionate campaigner for social justice” on his Twitter post.

He is passionate about the NHS and social care  and has worked with NHS trade unions to make the case to scrap the NHS pay cap and for fair funding, he said.

“As Lewisham East’s MP I would fight to save our NHS, I would fight for investment in mental health services, and I would fight to end the disgraceful exploitation of our care workers,” his post read.

Mr Bonavia’s statement on his decision to stand for selection focused on the experience of migrants in the borough.

“If elected as our Labour MP I will be a champion for a welcoming and tolerant society that supports migrants in achieving their potential here rather than denigrates them,” his statement read.

The parliamentary by-election in Lewisham East will take place on 14 June.

Labour won the seat by more than 21,000 votes in last year’s general election with the Conservatives second and Liberal Democrats third.

Confirmation hearings will take place later in May for Lewisham councillors to approved the proposed cabinet.
