A stash of illegal cigarettes was found in a shop in Plumstead after it was raided by council staff.

Greenwich Council trading standards officers used sniffer dogs to locate the contraband at Maistas and Gerimai on Herbert Road.

The illegal tobacco haul contained almost 3,000 cigarettes and led to the business being handed one of the largest court fines for a Greenwich Council prosecution in the past few years.

Mantas Andris, the 28-year-old owner and director of the store who lived in Belvedere, was fined a total of £7,550.

He pleaded guilty to the charges at Bexley Magistrates Court on April 16.

If you have a case of suspected sales of illegal tobacco, you can report it to the council by calling the citizens advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or via the online form at www.keep-it-out.co.uk.
