A botched hotel development in Greenwich will be made even bigger after councillors gave a revamped scheme the go ahead.

Developers previously dropped out of building the hotel, in a small strip of land close to the Blackwall Tunnel in Tunnel Avenue, over funding.

The stalled six-storey hotel has been left unfinished, and has since been sold in order to be redeveloped into a Holiday Inn.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, Greenwich councillors agreed to giving the scheme another lease of life.

Planning permission was granted for developers to make the hotel even bigger, up to eight storeys high, and to extend other floors.

The application said: “In order to make the scheme financially viable, the hotelier chain requires an additional 18 rooms on the site.”

An additional 68 bedroom hotel would be welcome in Greenwich, a borough that has reported a record number of tourists.

The borough had close to 20m visitors last year.

The hotel site is approximately half way between the 02 and Greenwich Town Centre.
